How often are you stumped when it comes to picking amazing outfits for your fall family pictures?
Do you search Pinterest for hours and then spend a bunch of money on clothes for your fall family pictures, only to not love the outfits you put together?
Are you struggling to pick out a cohesive color palette for your fall or holiday family portrait session?
If you related to any of the above questions, you are not alone! It can be super daunting to be in charge of such a crucial thing as picking out outfits for a fall family pictures. You want everyone to look good and feel their best, but you are also investing a lot in the photos, so you don’t want to hate the pictures because you didn’t love the outfits.
There is a formula that I follow every time I am selecting outfits for my fall family pictures, and it helps me to make decisions quickly and to be confident in my choices.
Here is the formula that I ALWAYS follow.
Let me break down what I mean by texture, solid, and print
TEXTURE
- Anything that is not flat like cotton.
- Think crocheted items, velvet, suede, or chunky sweaters. You may not think they make a huge difference, but they WILL show up on camera and give your photos more depth
SOLID
- This is pretty self-explanatory. A solid is anything that does not have a print.
- Solids are still super important because they can be used to introduce color, or they can give the eye a visual break.
- Solids and texture can also be combined! Note how the green sweater below has the ribbed detail at the bottom.
PATTERN
- This is where you can have fun! Patterns like plaid, florals, stripes, polka dots, and gingham are all amazing options
- If you are ready to be adventurous, try mixing your patterns! Stripes are considered a “neutral” in the print world 😉
EXTRA TIPS FOR PICKING OUT FALL FAMILY PICTURE OUTFITS
- Start with a piece of clothing for your inspiration. If you are the mom, you can use the pattern of your dress as inspiration for the color palette. One year, I even used a pair of boots for my inspiration for our outfits! (These boots are a very similar style to what I used for inspo. They helped me choose to go for a more casual, outdoorsy vibe for out outfits).
- Shop your closet FIRST. Always look through your closet and see what you have that you can use to piece a look together.
- Consult Pinterest! Take a look at my “Fall Family Pictures – Oufit Inspo” board for ideas!
- Consider the weather. If you are taking pictures in late fall, remember that it will be chilly and plan accordingly for that.
- If the weather is going to be cold, embrace that! Stylish coats and chunky scarves are an excellent way to add texture to your outfits.
A NOTE ABOUT COLOR FOR FALL FAMILY PICTURE OUTFITS
Now that you know the magical formula that will help you pick amazing outfits for fall family pictures, it’s time to talk about COLOR!
Color is very subjective and each family will have to decide which colors fit their aesthetic the best. However, here are a couple general rules that I like to follow.
- Stay away from bright neon colors as they will cast a color hue onto your skin
- If you are going to be shooting outside, try to stay away from green as it will blend into the background
- Pick complimenting colors, not matchy matchy. Again, this is where it is helpful to use a specific piece of clothing for inspo. For example, in the photo at the top of the post, I used the purple dress with orange flowers as my inspo for the color palette. I didn’t choose any purple to match, but I chose colors out of the print of the dress that would help the outfits feel cohesive/
